red-letter

Once, back when I was feeling especially motivated, I ran a half marathon. During the months leading up to the race, Saturday mornings were reserved for long runs on trails at a nearby state park. (Those who know me know that running, outdoors, and I don’t mix. Believe me, I know. Wonders never cease.)

One morning on the trails, the air hinted at an early morning summer storm: still, quiet, the canopy trees’ leaves gently rustling. “I kinda wish it would rain,” I said to my faithful training friend, casually inviting relief from the summer heat. Within minutes, a light drizzle began to fall and quickly escalated into a heavy shower that I typically prefer to enjoy snuggled up on my couch with a good book. We ran the remaining three miles splashing through the best mud puddles, soaking wet and filthy from head to toe, and squealing like kids at the unexpected opportunity to play in the rain.

It was an ordinary Saturday morning, in an ordinary park, running an ordinary trail, and yet, it is my favorite memorable scene of 2009. A red-letter moment, interrupting the ordinary.

Ordinary. It gets a bad rap. But that Saturday morning, God chose to bless me in the ordinary. As I see it, Jesus works mightily through – and despite – the ordinary, doesn’t He? At his birth, He was surrounded by ordinary people. All His life, the ordinary people heard Him gladly. In the upper room, He was surrounded by disciples, who were ordinary people. Ultimately, it was for ordinary people that Jesus came into the world, and it’s in our every day, ordinary lives that He desires to give us red-letter moments.

I’m an ordinary gal, adopted into the family of an extraordinary, red-letter God (even Jesus’ words in the Scriptures are red-lettered, people!). This blog is about my everyday life, and the red-letter moments therein. (And, you can read a little overview here, too.)  Thanks for visiting!
